The small Augusta Invitation gave Davidson Rowing a few surprises

19 March 2005

AIKEN, S.C. – At their first sprint of the season, Davidson ran into tough competition in the South. Davidson raced in 5 events at the Augusta Invitational Regatta: one Varsity Women’s 4+, two Varsity Men’s 4+, a Novice Women’s 4+, a Women’s Novice sculling double, and a Men’s Novice 8+. For this regatta, Davidson filled their trailer with their best, most beautiful boats, including the new Women’s Varsity boat and the new novice 8+, which had their racing debuts.

This small regatta resulted in a few Davidson highlights. Winning their heat and, according to initial times, coming in first out of 8 total boats in their event, the Men’s Varsity A moved to the finals, where they placed a close fourth.

Placing third out of four boats in their flight, the Women’s Novice 4+ was the only Davidson team to receive medals. All of the teams fought hard. A regatta more geared towards fun and practice, the Augusta Invitational in Aiken, SC was a good learning experience for the novices and good practice for the varsity. For most of the novices, this was their first sprint race and therefore “a good chance to see what sprints feel like," explained Davidson Crew President Sarah Wing '07.

Davidson will travel April 2 to Oak Ridge, Tenn., for the John Hunter Regatta. As with Augusta, John Hunter will be yet more preparation for the April 15-17 regatta for which Davidson Crew has been aiming: the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships (SIRA), also in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
