Premedical Society of Davidson College

January 24, 2001: Premedical Society/AED General Meeting

Here's what we talked about:

  1. This semester's schedule: We highlighted some of the events coming up this semester, including the Proctored MCAT Practice Exam Saturday February 10th and the Medical School Forum.  On April 25th, the AED initiation will include a guest speaker that everyone is invited to come see.
  2. The Premedical Society and AED are going to have more general meetings, wherein we are planning on inviting speakers on various topics, such as medical research, interesting topics in medicine, and other medical fields, such as Physician Assistants.  They are planned for February and March.
  3. Eliza and Carrie informed everyone that the mentor programs were going to continue, and that if anyone wanted to be a mentor or wanted a mentor to contact them as soon as possible.  Visit the mentor program webpage.
  4. Marie Sharp talked about volunteer at Strong Tower Free Medical Clinic, encourage members to volunteer at the clinic and other medical facilities.  Strong Tower is a free clinic located in Huntersville, NC, that offers free medical service to anyone.  They have opportunities for premedical students who want to translate or want additional patient contact.  If you want more information about Strong Tower, contact Marie Sharp at masharp@davidson.edu.
  5. JT Tolentino talked about the Premedical Society Committees.  The Alternative medicine committee is still going strong, with Ramya Partharasarthy (raparthasarathy@davidson.edu) planning new project this semester.  Also, the society plans on getting the Allied Health and Dental committees started.
  6. Mark Cody talked about the AED interview process.  Now that the applications are in, the interviews will take place this February.  The interview process is set up much like the PAC interview process.  It can be considered a "practice interview" for many.  He also informed the applicants that the AED President, John Kenyon, and the AED Vice President, Mark, will look at the applications, along with Dr. Putnam, in order to make a final decision.  The AED induction will be April 25th.
  7. The PAC dinner is this Monday, January 29th.  The PAC interviews will also be in February.  The interview process is much like a medical school interview.  Mia Hughes put together a packet of articles that she though people going through the PAC process might be interested in. If you would like a packet, please contact Mia Hughes mihughes@davidson.edu or JT Tolentino jttolentino@davidson.edu by February 1, 2001.
  8. Now that the CF Run has been cancelled, AED is looking for another volunteer program to participate in. AED and Premed society is asking anyone with a suggestion to contact us as soon as possible.  So far, we have recieved a number of great suggestions, such as going out to Hines Farm or to Joshua's Farm, both new rehabilitation farms.  If you have a suggestion, contact Mark Cody at macody@davidson.edu or John Kenyon at jokenyon@davidson.edu or JT Tolentino at jttolentino@davidson.edu.
  9. Finally, we ended the meeting evaluating how the Premedical Society and AED have been doing.  If you have any questions or complaints, contact us.
