Waitlist A list of students who are not assigned a room or do not participate in the lottery

What is the lottery?
The housing lottery is a process by which we make room assignments for the upcoming academic year. Students whose financial account with Business Services is satisfactory will receive a lottery number based on academic class credits (rising Senior, rising Junior, rising Sophomore).

How do I find a roommate?
The Residence Life Office front desk provides an information sheet that students looking for roommates may complete. These information sheets can be reviewed at the RLO front desk. If you are a member of a Patterson Court organization, it can also help you network.

Can I change rooms after the lottery?
After April 5th (the final phase of lottery) there are no room changes allowed until May 1 (September 4th for Martin Court and RLO Houses/Townhouses). This allows the Residence Life staff to assess pressing needs of those students who are still on the waitlist for housing. After May 1, students can choose to exchange rooms with other students (excluding singles and Martin Court apartments) as long as the quotas per floor are met (see quotas under terms). EACH student who changes a room assignment will be charged a fee of $50.00 each.

What if I do not get a room?
Beginning on Lottery Night, the Residence Life Office will keep a wait list for on-campus housing for students who did not get a room during the lottery process. (For details please see "Waitlist" section.)

What happens if I apply for a single and do not get one?
A student who attends Single Room Lottery night and does not get a single will go on the waitlist in lottery number order. Any additional students who ask to be added to the single waitlist will go on that waitlist AFTER the students who attended Single Room Lottery night and will be added by the date and time the request is made. At that point you can choose to match up with another student who is on the single room waitlist to apply for a double room together, knowing fully that if either were offered a single room it would be accepted. All students who do not receive a single on Single Room Lottery night, MUST participate in Double Room Lottery night (Phase V).

If I get permission to live off-campus, how do I find a place to live?
The Residence Life Office has an updated list of properties. This list is comprised of people in the community who are interested in renting to students.

Can my friends and I “cluster” in the single room sections of Tomlinson Hall?
No single room clusters are allowed.

Can I call my friends to confirm a Lottery selection?
No.  Also,
the use of cell phones is prohibited during Lottery selection and sign-up.

Can I get an apartment in Martin Court as a rising junior?
Mixed groups of Seniors & Juniors or Junior groups may apply for a Martin Court Apartment by submitting their application by the Phase I deadline; Noon, March 15th (MCF apartments) and the Phase II deadline; Noon March 22nd (4 person apartments). All senior groups will be accommodated first in Phase I & II and any remaining apartments will be assigned to “mixed groups” which is determined by lottery number total for the group. Please see Lottery Handbook for details.

Are seniors guaranteed an apartment in Martin Court?
No. There are 338 beds in the Martin Court complex, however the rising senior class typically has more than 400 students. Some seniors, of course, will apply for off-campus permission. Also, students who are on staff will make up their own groups, which may include students who are not seniors.

What are the options for substance-free housing?
Substance free housing is available for first year students and sophomores.  First year sub-free housing will be determined during the roommate pairing and assignment process this summer.  Sophomore sub-free housing for 2006-2007 is on the 1st floor of Belk.

Applications for sophomore substance-free housing are available in RLO and will be due Tuesday, April 4 at noon. Room selection will take place in RLO on Tuesday, April 4 at 4:30 p.m.

Is furniture provided for the common rooms in the Tomlinson pods?
Yes. The Residence Life Office provides a round table, four chairs, a sofa and small end table for the pod common areas.

What happens if I am considering going abroad next fall?
Please see the "On Leave" section of the Lottery Handbook for information.
