Davidson offers students who have applied for need-based aid and who are eligible for federal work-study the chance to do community service as a way of fulfilling their work-study commitment. The program allows students to form valuable partnerships with various local off-campus agencies. Examples of placements include the Ada Jenkins Center, Hospice of Lake Norman, the Lake Norman YMCA, Davidson Elementary and the Davidson IB Middle School.

Requirements
This program differs from Davidson’s Community Volunteer programs in that students are expected to work 8-12 hours per week at their agency and are paid a starting wage of $6.50 per hour.

In addition to their work in the community, community service work study students are required to attend one large group meeting per month. These meetings cover a variety of topics including training on how to be an effective volunteer. They offer fun experiences such as make-your-own-sundae parties and reflection dinners. The hope is that the group will establish a sense of community and will serve as a support network for each other. Students are compensated for these training/bonding times also.
