What about funds for summer?
$5,000 is available for two required summers of 280-hour, seven-week summer service placements (which can also carry a salary, such as summer camp counselor). Each of these two summers include a $1,500 earning stipend and a $1,000 living stipend in addition to whatever salary the position pays.

The student can choose which two summers he/she wants to do the required service and can use any leftover living stipend plus a $500 bonus for a third optional summer.

Examples:
Camp Counselor (plus pay)
Intern at a Non-profit Organization (i.e. Housing Coalition)
Summer Swim Coach for a youth team (plus pay)
Working in a garden whose harvests go to the Salvation Army
Working with Aid to Inmate Mothers

Can I receive Bonner funds in addition to other scholarships?
Yes. Bonner Money can be used for tuition or other expenses like books.

Can I study abroad?
Yes. Completing service hours while abroad is not as easy as at Davidson, but it can be done. The Bonner Staff will help you and they will be flexible. When you go abroad you will also receive a study abroad notebook that will help supplement service hours.

What are some examples of service opportunities?
Bonners engage in many different types of service. Some examples are:

The Ada Jenkins Community Center as tutor/mentor
Carolina Raptor Center as assistant
Davidson IB Middle School as tutor
Free Clinic of Our Towns as translator, physician’s assistant, or clerk
The Urban Ministry Center as food bank volunteer, soup kitchen volunteer
Catawba Lands Conservancy as stream cleanup volunteer or Board member

What involvement will I have with other Davidson Bonner scholars?
1st year students
All first year Bonner Scholars participate in a series of Monday night dinners.

2nd, 3rd and 4th year students
All upper-class students attend bi-monthly class meetings.

All Bonner Scholars attend fall and spring retreats. These are on campus, one day retreats during which we plan for the semester and reconnect.
