General
travel information and information on living abroad
Many students consider
working overseas following graduation. While there are options for doing
so, they can be a challenge to find. Your first question should
be, "Why do I want to go abroad?" There can be several answers to this.
Perhaps you simply want to live in and experience another culture for
a short time, or you enjoyed your study abroad experience and would like
to continue it. Usually, these reasons will require you to simply obtain
a short-term job, but it is important to decide whether you are looking
for a temporary or a permanent position.
For U.S. students desiring to teach abroad
Teaching abroad is
a huge field with many different opportunities. Finding a job is not always
the most difficult part. Evaluating which overseas programs are reputable
can be the most challenging aspect of the job search.
In general, avoid any organization that is reluctant to provide references
or does not provide clear contact information including a full mailing
address. Don't be fooled by a slick Web site; it does not necessarily
mean the organization is legitimate. Below are some reputable sites that
you may find particularly helpful in your job search:
JET
Program
This site is easy to use and includes experiences by other students in
Japan, basic info on living in Japan, and a list of requirements geared
towards recent graduates.

rights.

For long-term, professional employment
Finding long-term
employment overseas can be a challenging yet rewarding endeavor. PLEASE
NOTE: It is very difficult to get work permits in a foreign country
unless you have a specific skill that is seldom offered by a national
of the host country. A common mistake for U.S. students is that they
are far too general about what they want to do; simply looking for a position
in "international business" is too general. Typically, you need
to work in the United States for a few years, honing your skills and learning
new skills before seeking an international assignment.
A good starting point
for useful information on gaining long-term international employment is
the University of Michigan
International Center, which will provide you with more information
