Most graduate programs require a specific admission test. The most common entrance exam is the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) which is similar to the SAT for undergraduate admissions and includes a quantitative, verbal, and analytical writing section. Other exams required for professional schools include the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT), the Law School Admission Test (LSAT), and the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT). Registration deadlines for these tests are well in advance of the actual test dates, and most are given only a few times a year. EXCEPTION: The GMAT and GRE (general) exams are offered in a computer adaptive version which can be taken almost any time. If you are unclear about the correct exam or exams to take for the graduate programs to which you are applying, please contact the graduate school's admissions office or Career Services (704-894-2132). Proper test preparation is critical. It can help lower your anxiety level and help you achieve the best score possible. A variety of preparation books and disks are available that review the content of the examination, explain the test procedures and types of questions, and provide practice tests. In addition, the Educational Testing Service produces a CD-ROM called PowerPrep which simulates the computer-adaptive version of the GMAT and GRE. Also, GRE and LSAT preparation courses are often available on campus and in the surrounding area. Please contact Career Services (704-894-2132) for information regarding test preparation options. Even if you plan to take time off after Davidson but intend to pursue further graduate or professional education in the future, you may want to take the GRE or other appropriate tests during your senior year. Scores are typically considered valid for five years for most examinations, and as long as you have the time, money and commitment level it may be wise to get these tests out of the way.
