ALUMNI SERVICE AWARD
As an alumni chapter president, vice president, and secretary, Regional Campaign committee member, frequent reunion committee member, and co-chair of his 50th Reunion, Ben Vernon has provided his class and Davidson College with leadership over the past four decades.
This former captain of the golf team has remained loyal to Davidson College, especially to Wildcat athletics. He helped establish the Davidson College Golf Council, which has been instrumental in organizing the Dr. Tom Scott Memorial Golf Tournament. He is a former board member of the Davidson Athletic Foundation and recently served on the Golf Coach Selection Committee. He also has assumed several development responsibilities as a volunteer for corporate and Ne Ultra fund-raising efforts and as an Annual Fund class agent.
Ben's commitment to Davidson has been mirrored by his civic involvement. Over the years, he has served in a leadership capacity for the Alexander Children's Center, the Pines at Davidson, Sharon Towers, Barium Springs Home, North Carolina Education Assistance Authority, Communities in Schools, Apple Foundation, North Carolina Retirement System, North Carolina Traders Association, and the Investment Committee of the Treasurer of the State of North Carolina, among others. His commitment to his church has remained at the forefront, through his service as deacon at First Presbyterian Church of Rocky Mount, N.C., and elder, chairman of the Board of Deacons, Sunday School teacher, and chairman of the Pulpit Nominating Committee at Covenant Presbyterian Church. Ben's support of the Presbyterian Church is evident through his involvement as a member of the boards of the Presbyterian Lay Committee, Union Theological Seminary, and Presbyterian Foundation.
Because you have delighted in your service to Davidson and encouraged others to do the same, because you have been an enthusiastic and loyal support of alma mater, and because you make Davidson proud to claim you as her own, the Davidson College Alumni Association presents you, Benjamin Thomas Vernon, Jr., with the Alumni Service Award, on the occasion of the Class of 1950's 50th Reunion, April 29, 2000.
