ALUMNI SERVICE AWARD
An article in the November 1983 issue of North Carolina Magazine stated that "Graeme Keith is the kind of man you would want on hand to speak to a civic gathering, or as a next door neighbor, or to teach your child's Sunday School class." What the article failed to mention is that Graeme Keith is the kind of man that any institution would want as an alumnus. Davidson College is fortunate to be able to make such a claim.
As a student at Davidson, Graeme was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity, the Interfraternity Council, and ROTC. His athletic prowess and leadership skills were recognized through his participation on the basketball and golf teams and his election to captain of both. His student involvement was just a prelude for a lifetime of service to alma mater.
Throughout his career with First Union, Georgia Railroad Bank & Trust, BarclaysAmerican Corporation, and the development of The Keith Corporation, formed in 1989 with his son Greg, his civic involvement has remained impressive. Graeme has served in a leadership capacity for Myers Park Presbyterian Church, Communities in Schools of North Carolina, Metropolitan YMCA of Greater Charlotte, Presbyterian Hospital Foundation, The Good Fellows Club, Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, Samaritan's Purse, Charlotte Country Day Schools, and the United Way. His leadership skills were tapped in 1995 to head the organizing committee for Billy Graham's Carolinas Crusade in 1996, which filled the 72,600-seat Ericsson Stadium in Charlotte four nights in a row.
At no point did Davidson suffer because of Graeme's many calls to service. He has served Davidson well over the years in a wide variety of capacities, as Annual Fund agent, volunteer for corporate and Ne Ultra fund-raising efforts, and member of the 40th Reunion committee. Graeme Keith has provided Davidson with leadership over the past four decades as a member of the Board of Visitors, Davidson Athletic Foundation Board of Directors, and through his twelve years of service as a member of the Board of Trustees. He also has assumed integral development responsibilities over the years as part of several major fund-raising committees, including the national steering committee and trustee development committee for Davidson's 1987 Program and the Baker Sports Complex Committee and the Major Gifts Committee during the Campaign for Davidson.
Because you have delighted in your service to Davidson and encouraged others to do the same; because you have been an enthusiastic and loyal servant to alma mater; and because you have always made Davidson proud to claim you as her own, the Davidson College Alumni Association honors you, Graeme McGregor Keith, with the Alumni Service Award, on the occasion of the Class of 1954's 45th Reunion, April 29, 2000.
