Alumni award winner Alex Bernhardt flanked by President Vagt and Alumni Association President Andy McElwee.

Alex's leadership skills were demonstrated early in his Davidson career. As a student, he was a member of the Eumenean Literary Society, the Male Chorus, and the Vagabonds. He served as freshman camp director of the YMCA and president of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. He was a member of Sigma Upsilon, a national honorary literary society, and was selected for Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.

While pursuing a successful career in the furniture industry, Alex dedicated himself to his community and his church. His involvement includes service as President of the Southern Furniture Manufacturers Association and director or board memberships of the Federal Reserve Bank, First Union, Duke Energy Corporation, the Morganton/Lenoir Airport Authority, Caldwell Memorial Hospital, and the North Carolina Governor's Business Council, to name a few. He has served as a trustee to Appalachian State University Business School and St. Andrews Presbyterian College and as deacon and elder at First Presbyterian Church in Lenoir.

As the fourth generation of his family to attend Davidson, his service to alma mater may have seemed pre-destined. But, Alex forged his own path as an alumnus, serving Davidson faithfully over the years. He volunteered as an Annual Fund class agent and reunion committee member. He served as a member of the Board of Trustees for twelve years, representing the Western North Carolina Presbytery. He is a past chair of the Board of Visitors, of which he was a member for twelve years. He was an enthusiastic co-chair of the Catawba Valley Regional Campaign during the Campaign for Davidson. His most significant commitment, however, was continuing the family tradition by sharing his Davidson experience with daughter Mary, Class of 1991, who represented the fifth generation of Bernhardts to attend Davidson.

Because you inspire others to your high standard of service; because you always have made service to Davidson a priority; and because you make Davidson proud to claim you as her own, the Davidson College Alumni Association presents you, George Alexander Bernhardt, Sr., with the Alumni Service Award, on the occasion of the Class of 1965's 35th Reunion, April 29, 2000.
