Types of Stores: Belk, Inc. owns and operates more than 200 department stores in 13 states in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States. It is the nation's largest privately owned department store company.
History: William Henry Belk founded the first store in Monroe, N.C., on May 29, 1888.
Ownership/Leadership: The children and other descendants of founder William Henry Belk and his brother, Dr. John M. Belk, own the majority of the stock in Belk, Inc. John M. Belk, son of founder William Henry Belk, is chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Belk, Inc. Thomas M. (Tim) Belk, Jr. is president of store divisions and real estate of Belk, Inc. H.W. McKay Belk is president of merchandising and marketing of Belk, Inc., and John R. (Johnny) Belk is president of finance, systems and operations of Belk, Inc.
Locations: 13 states: North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Virginia, Tennessee, Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, West Virginia and Texas.

Store size: The average Belk store has approximately 60,000 square feet of space. Some of the larger stores are in the 180,000 to 250,000-square-foot size range. The approximate total size of all stores combined is nearly 17 million square feet.
Employees: Belk employs approximately 22,000 people.
New Stores and Remodeled Stores: During the current fiscal year, Belk will open eight new stores--in Snellville, Ga., Spring Hill, Fla., Charleston, S.C., Fayetteville, Ga., Camden, S.C., Wilkesboro, N.C., Corinth, Miss., and Lady Lake, Fla. Five store expansions and 8 major renovations of existing stores are also scheduled for completion during the year. The total estimated capital expenditure for these projects is approximately $80 million.
Merchandise Offerings: Belk stores are leading distributors of merchandise for many of the nation's top fashion designers and national brand apparel, cosmetics, and home furnishings manufacturers, such as Estee Lauder, Clinique, Lancome, Jones New York, Liz Claiborne, Polo Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger Lee, Levi, Nike, Reebok, Bali and many others.
Private Brands: Belk stores offer exclusive private brand merchandise, including such quality, fashion-forward brands as Kim Rogers, Madison Studio, J Khaki, Home Accents and Meeting Street.
Belk Stores Services, Inc.: Offering services to Belk stores is Belk Stores Services, Inc., (BSS) located in Charlotte, N.C. A subsidiary of Belk, Inc., it provides a wide range of merchandising and other professional support services. They include: merchandising, marketing, advertising, visual merchandising, human resources, public relations, financial planning, accounting, insurance, real estate, architecture, store planning, credit, legal assistance, loss prevention, electronic data processing, telecommunications, merchandise distribution, supply purchasing, and others.
Community Involvement and Philanthropy: Belk has a strong tradition of community service and philanthropy in the markets it serves. Belk associates volunteer time, talents and leadership to innumerable civic and charitable organizations and community improvement efforts.
