Alumni Service Award:
If Davidson College beckons, Stephen Bishop Smith answers the call with love and enthusiasm for the institution. This son of Camilla, Georgia, started his "love affair" with the Red 'n Black as a freshmen football player -- "the biggest thing to hit the Davidson gridiron in nearly a decade." He has been an impact player ever since!
Leadership and servanthood were the mark of Steve's college days. As a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa honor society, president of the "D" Club, a Lieutenant Colonel in ROTC, Treasurer of the Beaver Club, leader in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and House Manager for Phi Delta Theta, Steve demonstrated his willingness to serve. Receiving numerous honors for his football prowess including being named twice to the All-Academic Southern Conference team, 2nd Team All-Southern Conference, Academic All-American Football team, and winning a NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winner to Stanford University (1966), Steve left no doubt about his passion for the sport and the college he represented. He continues to be part of the Davidson sports programs' "eyes and ears" in the Lone Star State.
After graduating from Davidson, Steve began a successful career in Dallas, Texas, as a financier joining several national financial services firms over the years and earning the prestigious James P. Hendrix Award given to Davidson alumni athletes who achieve distinction in their profession after leaving the college. In the midst of his professional achievements, Steve continued to serve his alma mater in a variety of ways, offering leadership during two regional campaigns, assisting with the Davidson Alumni Admissions Program (DAAP) and serving as chair of the Board of Visitors. More recently, he has served on Davidson's Board of Trustees and has rallied his classmates for the Annual Fund. As president of the Dallas Chapter of the Alumni Association, he has hosted the president of Davidson and other alumni in his home and in his city on numerous occasions and even co-hosted a Davidson event featuring Henry Kissinger - which was planned and organized solely by Steve and his friends. Steve has never stopped giving to Davidson his time, his leadership, and his wise counsel.
Because you have served your family as a loving son, husband and father; because you have brought great honor and distinction to your beloved school in all your actions; because you have been faithful in service and support of alma mater; because you have committed time and resources as "recruiter extraordinaire" for Wildcat sports; because you have remained loyal in every regard to Davidson football through thick and thin; because your creation of Stephen B. Smith Field at Richardson Stadium will provide a beautiful venue for Davidson's sons and daughters to compete; and because your distinguished career is a source of pride for all whom you have touched, the Davidson College Alumni Association is proud to present to you, Stephen Bishop Smith, Class of 1966, its Alumni Service Award on the occasion of your 35th Reunion.
