Davidson celebrated the the centennial of the birth of composer Aaron Copland in appropriately grand fashion.

The Davidson College Symphony Orchestra presented a Copland concert on November 12 and November 14 that included pre-concert talks about the composer from three students--juniors Lauren Becton and Ross Fenimore, and senior Andrew Oster.

Those three are enrolled in Music 223, "Copland," taught by Assistant Professor Neil Lerner, which celebrated the event in its own flamboyant way.

Members of the class packed a birthday cake with 100 candles, lighted them, and stood back as the flames proclaimed the genius of the great American composer. Davidson is one of the only schools in the country offering a specialized Copland course during the semester of his centennial.
