Japan's Erotic, Grotesque, Nonsense: Commodity Aesthetics become War Aesthetics

This talk will be about the mass culture phenomenon known as the "erotic, grotesque, nonsense" which dominated commercial culture in Japan from 1925–35. It will focus on the connection between the liberation of certain kinds of erotic practices and show how this became linked to specific crimes against humanities in Japan's wars in Asia.
