Federal Requirement 4.5 - Procedures for addressing written student complaints

The institution has adequate procedures for addressing written student complaints and is responsible for demonstrating that it follows those procedures when resolving student complaints. (See Commission policy 'The Review of Complaints Involving the Commission or its Accredited Institutions.')

Judgment of Compliance

Davidson College is in compliance for Federal Requirement 4.5.

Rationale for Judgment of Compliance

The procedures for addressing students’ concerns are described in the Student Handbook.  For complaints about another student, most of the rights and responsibilities are found in the Code of Responsibility. If that is the case, students may file a written complaint with the Dean of Students and, if there is enough evidence to proceed, proceed to a hearing before the Judicial Board or Honor Council.

If a student files a complaint about sexual misconduct, he/she may choose to file criminal charges, seek mediated resolution or pursue a hearing before the Sexual Misconduct Board. Davidson's Code of Sexual Misconduct can be viewed here.

In the case of sexual harassment, the student may provide a written complaint concerning a student, staff or faculty member and can utilize either the Dean of Student, Dean of Faculty or the Department of Human Resources. Davidson Sexual harassment policy can be viewed here. The Dean of Student maintains a list of Sexual Misconduct hearings for the past 5 years which can be viewed here.

For other complaints against staff, the Dean of Students is responsible for hearing the complaints and seeking a resolution where possible. For complaints against the faculty, the student addresses their concerns with the Vice President for Academic Affairs/Dean of Faculty.

Finally, for student concerns about a reported grade for a course, there is a formal procedure for appeal. The process is outlined on the Registrar's Web site and follows a process that begins with the responsible faculty person and concludes, if selected by the student, with an appeal before the Faculty Executive Committee. There are typically few grade appeals that reach the Dean of Faculty each year.
