Federal Requirement 4.2 - Relationship of curriculum to purpose and goals of institution

The institution maintains a curriculum that is directly related and appropriate to the purpose and goals of the institution and the diplomas, certificates or degrees awarded.

Judgment of Compliance

Davidson College is in compliance with Federal Requirement 4.2.

Rationale for Judgment of Compliance

The College’s Statement of Purpose attests that "Davidson has chosen to be a liberal-arts college." To that end our graduation requirements include a core curriculum that ensures students take courses from all subsets of the liberal arts disciplines, learn a second language, study a culture different than that of the dominate western culture, and participate in a writing-intensive seminar during the first-year. The College is organized by academic discipline or department; all of these departments represent traditional liberal-arts disciplines. A student is required to major in one of these departments, gaining depth in at least one discipline. (Note, a small number of students, with permission, design an interdisciplinary major through our Center for Interdisciplinary Studies.)

As stated in the “Academic Program and Policies: The Curriculum” section of the College Catalog:

The liberal arts curriculum at Davidson College is dedicated to the intellectual and personal growth of students. This curriculum affirms the intrinsic worth of a broad exposure to intellectual and artistic achievement and strives to nurture students’ capacities for knowledge, understanding, judgment, and compassion. Teaching is the primary activity and responsibility of the faculty, which is also active in research and service. Developing skills in the methods by which knowledge is acquired, evaluated, and appropriately applied is the primary activity and responsibility of students.

While offering extensive support for students with professional interests (e.g., business or medicine), Davidson does not have any for-credit pre-professional programs, consistent with our mission as a liberal arts institution.

The College awards a B.A. degree to those students who major in the humanities and social sciences (except psychology). For students majoring in the natural sciences and psychology, we appropriately offer a B.S. degree.
