Compliance Certification Report

Federal Requirement 4.1 - Evaluation of Student Achievement

When evaluating success with respect to student achievement in relation to the institution's mission, the institution includes, as appropriate, consideration of course completion, state licensing examinations, and job placement rates.

Judgment of Compliance

Davidson College is in compliance with Federal Requirement 4.1.

Rationale for Judgment of Compliance

Davidson College consistently evaluates the achievement of its graduates, not only by monitoring rates of course completion, state licensing examinations, and job placement rates, but also by surveys and other data.

Rates of course completion. Davidson College collects data on the percentage of students that graduate from the College within a six-year window. For the last five years, that percentage rate has averaged near 90 percent. This information can be found here.

Licensing examinations. The Department of Education offers the College's only programs that require state licensing examinations. The Department of Education at Davidson works closely with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction in preparing students to pass the necessary state board exams so that an interested student may acquire a Licensure Concentration in Education, resulting in the attainment of a North Carolina teaching license. Davidson students interested in teaching in North Carolina’s K-12 public school system must take a two-part exam given by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (Praxis I and Praxis II). The Department of Education has been archiving the Davidson College students’ test scores on this exam for the last 10 years. Since 1996, all Davidson students who have taken this exam have passed and received their North Carolina teaching license.  The results of the Praxis I and Praxis II exams since 2001 may be found here.

Job Placements.  Davidson College monitors job placement rates in different ways. The College has in place, through the Career Services office, a Senior Survey which is designed to track graduating seniors six to seven months post-graduation. The survey includes questions on job or post-graduate school placement, internships, and other activities. The results of the 2004 survey can be found here. For the last five years, the survey has had a return rate above 95 percent. Given the very high response rate, the survey gives the College very accurate data about the nature of students' first experiences upon graduating. This allows us to determine the percentage of graduates immediately pursuing further education, securing full-time employment, and other options. We have information on which fields students are studying as well as the industries in which they are employed.

The College Relations office utilizes several formal and informal instruments to track the alumni. These include:

  • An alumni survey is mailed out every five years in conjunction with the class reunion cycle. These surveys include requests for information on graduate school attendance and completion as well as professional information.
  • The Alumni Office publishes an alumni directory every five years. In preparation for that project the office mails a similar survey to all alumni seeking the same information as detailed above.
  • Every fiscal quarter, one-eighth of the alumni body receives a card from the Alumni Office that seeks more general alumni information that can be shared in the Davidson Journal (the quarterly flagship publication of Davidson College including articles on topics of local, regional, and national interest; Alumni class notes; athletics news; and editorials). For the younger alumni classes it becomes an instrument to track recent graduate school degrees and job placements.
  • Informally, the entire College Relations staff assumes responsibility for soliciting updated contact information from our alumni which often includes professional information.

Several departments also maintain their own databases on graduated majors.

The College is presently working with the Office of Institutional Research to create a survey that can be sent to all graduates every two years in order to track graduates' chosen career paths more closely.
