Comprehensive Standard 3.9.3 - Qualification of staff of student affairs programs

The institution provides services supporting its mission with qualified personnel to ensure the quality and effectiveness of its student affairs programs.

Judgment of Compliance

Davidson College is in compliance with Comprehensive Standard 3.9.3.

Rationale for Judgment of Compliance

The College’s Statement of Purpose includes a statement that stresses that the “primary purpose of Davidson College is to prepare young men and women for lives of leadership and service.” The Division of Student Life, in connection with that purpose, provides a variety of services, programs, and social activities that support the academic, personal and social development of students.

The Mission of the Division of Student Life is:

The staff in the Division of Student Life promotes Davidson College’s commitment to educate students in ways that are mentally, spiritually, and physically liberating.  We seek to provide an environment that fosters students’ self-understanding through personal and intellectual development in a diverse and caring community. In challenging and supporting students, we provide resources and opportunities for leadership, service, recreation, and reflection while encouraging a life-long commitment to learning, integrity, and mutual respect.

By encouraging students to be involved and engaged in all facets of campus life, the Division of Student Life seeks to promote a sense of civic responsibility, personal growth and intellectual exploration. The division consists of Careers Services, Office of the Chaplain, College Union, Community Service/Bonner, Dean of Student’s Office, Office of Public Safety and Police, Residence Life, Student Health and Counseling Center, and the Lilly Program for the Theological Exploration of Vocation

A listing of the staff and their educational preparation is found in the College Catalogue, pages 212-214, and is listed in Supporting Documents.

As evidence of the quality and effectiveness of student affairs programs, each department has established learning outcomes, assessment methods, surveys and, in some cases, student advisory boards. In addition, each department has completed a five year strategic plan.  Each plan contains identified goals and action plans.
