Compliance Certification Report

Comprehensive Standard 3.9.1 - Statement of student rights and responsibilities

The institution publishes a clear and appropriate statement of student rights and responsibilities and disseminates the statement to the campus community.

Judgment of Compliance

Davidson College is in compliance with Comprehensive Standard 3.9.1.

Rationale for Judgment of Compliance

The statements regarding student rights and responsibilities may be found in the student handbook, known as the Red Book. The primary policies affecting students are contained within the Davidson College Honor Code and the Code of Responsibility. The Honor Code frames the academic life of the institution and asks the students to commit to an environment in which they agree not to “lie,” “cheat,” or “steal” and agree to not tolerate others who do.

The Code of Responsibility is based on an assumption that students can and should agree to live in a community where personal responsibility is expected for one’s actions and where, given that expectation, a minimum of rules is outlined. Both Honor Code and Code of Responsibility violations are adjudicated by the students who form the Honor Council, with faculty also involved with Code of Responsibility issues. Students receive an extensive orientation to both codes during orientation.

In compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Davidson restricts access to and disclosure of information from students' educational records without written consent. Students are advised of FERPA through the Registrar's Web site. Crime Statistics are also made public here.
