Comprehensive Standard 3.8.3 - Number and qualifications of staff in library and information resources

The institution provides a sufficient number of qualified staff—with appropriate education or experiences both in library or other learning/information resources—to accomplish the mission of the institution.

Judgment of Compliance

Davidson College is in compliance with Comprehensive Standard 3.8.3.

Rationale for Judgment of Compliance

There are 11 professional librarians on the staff, each with a masters degree in library science from an accredited library school.  Four have a second masters; two have doctorates.  This number is above the average of the Oberlin group.  There is one non-librarian department head, the library business manager, who has a college degree in business administration.  There are 11.83 full-time equivalent (FTE) support staff members, six with college degrees.  This number is below the average number (14) of the Oberlin group.  The Davidson College statistics from the Oberlin group can be found here.

The ratio of library staff to students is 1:72, close to the 25th percentile of the Oberlin Group (in this case, the lower percentile is positive). A copy of the Library's organizational chart can be found here. Each librarian has an academic transcript in the files in the Office of Academic Affairs. All staff members are evaluated three times a year. On occasion the Director voluntarily invites all staff members to complete an anonymous evaluation of his effectiveness.  The results are tabulated by staff members and results are shared with the Director and the Vice President of Academic Affairs.  Participation to date has been 100 percent.
