Comprehensive Standard 3.7.5 - Responsibilities and authority of faculty

The institution publishes policies on the responsibility and authority of faculty in academic and governance matters.

Judgment of Compliance

Davidson College is in compliance with Comprehensive Standard 3.7.5.

Rationale for Judgment of Compliance

The primary responsibility for the quality of the educational program resides with the faculty. The extent of the participation and jurisdiction of the faculty in academic and governance affairs is published in the Davidson College Constitution, and in the Faculty By Laws published in the Faculty Handbook. The faculty has general responsibility for the planning and guidance of the educational program as stated in Article III of the Davidson College Constitution. The College publishes an organizational chart that shows lines of authority and responsibility.

The faculty also elects members to the Advisory Councils for Finance, Personnel, and Development; Admission and Financial Aid; Intercollegiate Athletics; and Campus and Religious Life. Faculty are also represented in the Student Conduct Council and Review Board. The faculty elects or requests that the President appoint committees or commissions for limited charges not falling under the jurisdiction of standing committees.  (Faculty Bylaws 1.6, p. 17)
