Comprehensive Standard 3.7.4 - Academic Freedom

The institution ensures adequate procedures for the safeguarding and protecting of academic freedom.

Judgment of Compliance

Davidson College is in compliance with Comprehensive Standard 3.7.4.

Rationale for Judgment of Compliance

As stated in Article X of the Davidson College Constitution, Davidson College is fully committed to the principles of academic freedom as formulated in the 1940 Statement of Principles on Academic Freedom and Tenure by the Association of American Colleges and the American Association of University Professors. Within that context, Article X governs the terms and conditions of the employment of members of the Faculty of the College.

Continuous tenure is conferred by the Trustees according to a timeframe set out by the College and upon evidence of demonstrated professional competence, service to the academic community, and commitment to the welfare of the College. The faculty participates in the process through three elected committees: The Committee on Professional Affairs, the Faculty Tenure Committee, and the Faculty Hearings Committee.

The Faculty Handbook also defines one function of the Committee on Professional Affairs as the protection of academic freedom:

It shall be the duty of this Committee:  (a) To review current practices at Davidson College concerning preservation of academic freedom; policies regarding Faculty appointments, promotions, and tenure; programs of Faculty welfare, including policies concerning compensation and fringe benefits; and policies of institutional support for study, research, travel, and active participation in professional organizations.

Termination of an appointment with continuous tenure, or of a special or probationary appointment before the specified term, may be effected by the College only for adequate cause as detailed in Section 8 of Article X.
