Comprehensive Standard 3.4.9 - Appropriate academic support services

The institution provides appropriate academic support services.

Judgment of Compliance

Davidson College is in compliance with Comprehensive Standard 3.4.9.

Rationale for Judgment of Compliance

In support of its commitment to the overall success of its students, Davidson College provides a broad range of academic support services.  The services are provided within the Dean of Students Office as well as within various academic departments.  They include:

  • Tutoring by upper-class students as selected by the faculty of a particular discipline
  • An "early warning" system that begins with the faculty identifying those students who are struggling academically. Upon identification, the Dean of Students office meets individually with each student, as does the faculty advisor.
  • Assistance in writing provided by the Writing Center.  The Center is directed by a member of the English faculty and staffed by upper-class students.
  • Assistance in math provided by a lab staffed by the Department of Mathematics.
  • Workshops and individual assistance in time management, study skills and test preparation provided by the Counseling Center and Dean of Students Office.
  • A specific program of academic support for students on academic probation that includes individual assessment, counseling and planning.
  • Assistance with speeches, group projects and interviews through the Speaking Center.

Additional support includes required participation in Davidson 101 – a one semester, non-credit course that includes time management and study skills preparation.

All students are required to take an intensive writing course during their first year.  Taught by various faculty, it is offered across the curriculum in numerous disciplines.

Finally, all full-time faculty serve as academic advisers for entering students and serve as their adviser for their first two years or until the declaration of a major. (Advisers use the Comprehensive Academic Plan to track and plan student courses and activities during the first two years.)
