Comprehensive Standard 3.4.2 - Continuing education, outreach and service programs are consistent with mission

The institution's continuing education, outreach, and service programs are consistent with the institution's mission.

Judgment of Compliance

Davidson College is in compliance with Comprehensive Standard 3.4.2.

Rationale for Judgment of Compliance

While Davidson does not have a continuing education program, the College’s commitment to service and outreach is clear in its Statement of Purpose: “The primary purpose of Davidson College is to assist students in developing humane instincts and disciplined and creative minds for lives of leadership and service.” While service and community engagement are core values that are enacted throughout campus, the Davidson College Office of Community Service serves as the “hub” for service efforts on campus. The office offers a range of major programs, events, and resources for students, faculty, community partners, and staff to integrate volunteer and community service into their academic and co-curricular lives. Further, the office works cooperatively and collaboratively with other functional areas across campus to promote service and outreach.

Major programs:  Major programs in the Office of Community Service include the Bonner Scholars program, Freedoms Schools, Service Learning, Federal Community Service Workstudy, Community Partnership Development and United Community Action.  Each academic year, 80 Bonner Scholars each complete 280 hours of community service, and complete 240 hours of service for two out of three summers as college students.  In addition to being involved with direct service with the community, scholars engage in educational and reflective sessions that encourage them to consider the larger social issues embedded in their service and how service will fit into their lives beyond Davidson College.  Scholars reflect on their experience orally and in writing and they are responsible for the logistics of developing, implementing and evaluating educational sessions.  Freedom Schools is an intensive summer enrichment program and monthly academic year program for children in primary and secondary grades.  Fourteen Davidson students serve as interns at two community sites. The Federal Community Service workstudy program has 20 students participating in service at several community sites as part of their workstudy job. The service/community based learning and research program provides resources for faculty and students who want to integrate service with academic study. The program includes a listing of community opportunities and a range of resources for curriculum development.  The Community Partnership branch of the Office of Community Service works to develop partnerships with non-profit organizations in the Davidson and greater Charlotte area. Finally, United Community Action (UCA) is a student government organization for 26 student-run service groups. Each group offers events and direct service opportunities for the campus community in partnership with a local non-profit organization.

Events: The Office of Community Service also offers a series of events open to the campus community. These events include a new student orientation service day, semi-annual volunteer fair, annual celebration of service awards ceremony, semi-annual alternative break service trips, and an annual international service trip.

Resources: In addition to its major programs and events, the office offers a range of resources and services for students, faculty, staff and community members. The office offers, twice a year, a grant program that awards over 58,000 dollars to support student-authored grant proposals for service initiatives; offers consulting and training on the development and implementation of service programs, including educational sessions; works with the service chairs of the fraternities and eating houses as they develop their service initiatives; and features a library of resources for sign-out including books, DVD's, and curriculum guides.

Collaborative / Cooperative Service Programs: The Community Service Office also works closely with other functional areas on campus that program around service and community outreach, including the Lilly Program, the Education Department, Davidson Outdoors, and the Chaplain’s office.

Each summer, ten students are awarded internships that connect faith and vocation through the Lilly Program for the Theological Exploration of Vocation. These students are grouped in two categories: those in direct service internships (CARE Workers) and those in internships related to other professions (CREATE Interns).  The Office of Community Service and the Education Department co-sponsor the Leaps and Bounds program, a summer enrichment program for rising 5th, 6th and 7th grade students.  The program is organized and implemented by Davidson students with advisement from the Office of Community Service.

Also each summer, Davidson Outdoors offers the summer Odyssey program. The Odyssey is an eight-day outdoor program designed to provide first-year students with a unique, challenging, and fun transition to life at Davidson. The Service Odyssey uses intensive community service to build relationships among participants, increase social awareness, and challenge individuals to work constructively within a group. The Service Odyssey reflects and enriches Davidson's commitment to develop the spirit of service within each student.

Students who approach their service work through a faith-based lens work through efforts organized through the Chaplain’s office, including:  an annual “reverse mission” trip to Nicaragua and advisement of Room in the Inn and Sanctuary; two student run groups.
