Comprehensive Standard 3.4.1 - Educational programs are approved and assessed

The institution demonstrates that each educational program for which academic credit is awarded (a) is approved by the faculty and the administration, and (b) establishes and evaluates program and learning outcomes.

Judgment of Compliance

Davidson College is in compliance with Comprehensive Standard 3.4.1.

Rationale for Judgment of Compliance

(a)  Article II.4 of the Davidson College Constitution assigns to the Faculty “general responsibility for the planning and guidance of the Educational Program and Policy of the College.”  Article III of the Constitution defines the scope of the educational program and policy to include the College’s curricula, curriculum requirements, academic standards, and the awarding of academic degrees. Further, “the President and Vice President for Academic Affairs share with the Faculty responsibility for proposing Educational Program and Policy”; such proposals to be made through the appropriate Faculty committees.

As detailed in the Faculty Bylaws, The Faculty Committee on Educational Policy is composed of the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty, and six teaching members of the faculty elected by divisions and at-large. In addition, the Student Government Association selects one student to sit on the committee. The President is a nonvoting member and the Registrar is an advisory member. The major responsibilities of this committee are “establishing curricula, curriculum requirements, and academic standards; and regulating and changing academic departments.” Each new course is reviewed by the Faculty Committee on Educational Policy, and is discussed and voted on by the faculty.

(b) As noted in the response to Comprehensive Standard 3.3.1, Davidson College identifies expected outcomes for its educational programs through carefully crafted planning documents. Assessment of the College’s success in achieving those expected outcomes is a regularly occurring activity that provides feedback on which improvements are made.

Each academic department independently engages in planning and review. In the past year, every department revisited its mission, its core processes, and its outcome assessment techniques. As part of this process, each department had identified its principal goals or objectives within the broader Statement of Purpose of Davidson College. Each department then considers the means (core processes) used to achieve its goals. Such core processes tend to include curricular initiatives consonant with the broader objectives of the department. The final portion of its submission relates to assessment and the measures of outcomes that help the department determine if they are meeting their goals. Some of these outcome measures are quantitative; others have a more qualitative aspect to them.
