Comprehensive Standard 3.2.9 - Policies for appointing faculty and staff

The institution defines and publishes policies regarding appointment and employment of faculty and staff.

Judgment of Compliance

Davidson College is in compliance with Comprehensive Standard 3.2.9.

Rationale for Judgment of Compliance

Davidson College defines and publishes policies regarding appointment and employment of faculty and staff in several publications with wide distribution.

Faculty:  Article X sections 1 through 12 of the Davidson College Constitution begin with a Statement of Principles emphasizing its commitment to academic freedom as defined in the “1940 Statement of Principles on Academic Freedom and Tenure” by the Association of American Colleges and the American Association of University Professors. Following from this commitment, the College’s policies and procedures for faculty appointment and employment cover the following areas:

  • General authority and responsibility
  • Terms of appointment, including special appointments for fixed terms and probationary appointments
  • Termination of appointment by either the faculty member or the College
  • Dismissal and suspension policies
  • Actions by the Trustees
  • Terminal salary or notice
  • Appeals regarding probationary reappointment or tenure
  • Procedures for evaluation of faculty members

Policies and procedures are additionally presented in the Faculty Handbook.

All Employees: Policies and procedures for recruitment, hiring, and employment of all staff are provided in the Employee Guide and electronically in the online Employee Guide on the Office of Human Resources Web site.  The following areas are covered:

  • Nondiscrimination and accommodation of individuals with disabilities
  • Transfers to other campus positions
  • Probationary periods

  • Occupational and environmental health and safety

Policies regarding employment of relatives or minors, references, outside or secondary employment, and expenses associated with hiring are also documented.
