Compliance Certification Report

Comprehensive Standard 3.10.7 - Adequate physical resources

The institution operates and maintains physical facilities, both on and off campus, that are adequate to serve the needs of the institution's educational programs, support services, and other mission-related activities.

Judgment of Compliance

Davidson College is in compliance with Comprehensive Standard 3.10.7.

Rationale for Judgment of Compliance

The campus of Davidson College consists of approximately 450 acres in the town of Davidson, principally in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.  The developed part of the campus consists of approximately 100 acres containing 102 buildings with 1,512,288 square feet of space.  In addition to the main campus, Davidson College owns 106 acres with 14,375 square feet of building space on Lake Norman where the College conducts athletic and recreational programs. (See DC-CAFM Building Data and Facilities Statistics)

Through the strategic planning process as well as a campus planning process for the capital campaign, Davidson College management reviewed the condition and adequacy of every building for academic, administrative, residential, and recreational use.  As a result of the planning and the campaign, Davidson College renovated or constructed nine buildings, renovated or built four athletic facilities, and improved the campus infrastructure for heating, air conditioning, telecommunications, and data communications.  (See “Capital Projects 1997-2005” spreadsheet.)

Davidson College conducts planning for annual major maintenance through the Facilities Planning Committee and the capital budget process.  The College spends approximately $1.8 million per year on planned major maintenance, reflected in each annual capital budget.  (See “Final Capital Budget 05-06” spreadsheet.)

The Davidson College campus is a nationally registered arboretum displaying a major collection of woody plants that thrive in the Piedmont of North Carolina. The Physical Plant Grounds Department maintains an arboretum database as well as the labeling of more than 3,000 trees and shrubs on campus.

College Housing
As a tool to combat rising local housing costs and to ensure that our faculty and staff are proximate, Davidson College owns and maintains an inventory of rental housing within the Town of Davidson. Forty-seven rental units are available to faculty and staff, based upon a prioritization policy, each with a pricing structure held at the minimum market level.  In addition, Davidson College has a property ownership program in which it shares the cost of ownership in a land-lease contract.  Employees jointly own each home with the College, with the employee formally owning the structure and the College formally owning the land and leasing it to the employee.  (See “Non-campus property list” spreadsheet.)
