Compliance Certification Report

Comprehensive Standard 3.10.6 - A healthy, safe, and secure environment

The institution takes reasonable steps to provide a healthy, safe, and secure environment for all members of the campus community.

Judgment of Compliance

Davidson College is in compliance with Comprehensive Standard 3.10.6.

Rationale for Judgment of Compliance

With the close cooperation of the Offices of Public Safety, Residence Life and the Physical Plant, providing facilities and services that provide a sense of security and safety for the campus community is of high importance. The mission statements of each of these departments (Public Safety, Residence Life, and Physical Plant), the professional training of their staffs, and the daily protocols of the staff further demonstrate a commitment to the security of the campus community.

Programs include:

  • A card access system for all resident halls as well as academic buildings for access after hours
  • A “blue light” emergency phone system throughout the campus
  • Semi-annual campus lighting surveys done in cooperation with the Student Government Association
  • A R.A.D. (Rape Aggression Defense) training for students, faculty and staff
  • TIPS training required for all students who serve alcohol at student functions
  • An Emergency Escort System provided by Public Safety by request

In addition, the College provides Health Services on campus for students, faculty and staff.  For students, we provide a full-time health educator and three registered nurses.  In addition, we provide physician services on campus five days a week from 1-5:00 p.m.  After hours, on-call physician services are provided as well.  For the staff, an on-site nurse practitioner is provided on a part-time basis in the Health Center as well.

The Counseling Center, also located in the Student Health Center, provides a full array of psychological services.  The College employs two clinical psychologists and one counseling psychologist full-time and one half-time counselor.  In addition, a psychiatrist is available on campus once a week.

The Student Health Center also sponsors an annual Health Fair open to all members of the Campus Community.

Finally, the Office of Human Resources sponsors programs and services that provide for the health and counseling needs for the faculty and staff that include substance abuse, mental health and sexual harassment.
