Comprehensive Standard 3.1.1 - Characteristics of mission statement

The institution has a clear and comprehensive mission statement that guides it; is approved by the governing board; is periodically reviewed by the board; and is communicated to the institution's constituencies.

Judgment of Compliance

Davidson College is in compliance with Comprehensive Standard 3.1.1.

Rationale for Judgment of Compliance

Davidson College’s Statement of Purpose provides the foundation on which all activities and direction of the College are determined.  Included in that Statement are the College’s emphasis on learning and teaching in the liberal arts, its commitment to service, its appreciation of diversity, and its relationship with the Presbyterian Church.

The most recent review of the Statement of Purpose was the result of a Trustee Retreat that included a discussion of ways that it could be strengthened and clarified.  Suggestions were presented to the Board by the ad hoc committee charged with this review at its April 2003 meeting and additional changes made; the Board formally approved the new Statement at its February 2005 meeting.

The Statement of Purpose is communicated to Davidson’s constituencies in a variety of ways.  It appears on the College’s Web site, in the Faculty Handbook, the Davidson College Catalog, the Employee Guide, and the Fact File.

The Statement of Purpose also formed the basis for the recently completed Capital Campaign, Let Learning Be Cherished.
