Compliance Certification Report

Core Requirement 2.8 - Faculty Resources

The number of full-time faculty members is adequate to support the mission of the institution. The institution has adequate faculty resources to ensure the quality and integrity of its academic programs. In addition, upon application for candidacy, an applicant institution demonstrates that it meets the comprehensive standard for faculty qualifications.

Judgment of Compliance

Davidson College is in compliance with Core Requirement 2.8.

Rationale for Judgment of Compliance

From the Davidson College Statement of Purpose:

The primary purpose of Davidson College is to assist students in developing humane instincts and disciplined and creative minds for lives of leadership and service. In fulfilling its purpose, Davidson has chosen to be a liberal arts college, to maintain itself as a residential community of scholars, to emphasize the teaching responsibility of all professors, and to ensure the opportunity for personal relationships between students and teachers. Further, Davidson believes it is vital that all students in every class know and study under mature and scholarly teachers who are able and eager to provide for each of them stimulation, instruction, and guidance.

During fall 2005, Davidson College employed 159 full-time faculty and eight part-time faculty for a faculty FTE (full-time equivalent) of 162.1.  The student FTE to faculty FTE ratio was 10.4:1 (2005–2006 Fact File). The normal teaching load for regular full-time faculty members at Davidson College is five regular courses per year (Faculty Handbook 2.5.4.G). The average class size is 15 and over 70 percent of classes have fewer than 20 students.

Ninety-eight percent of the faculty hold terminal degrees in their field, and 95 percent of the faculty are tenured or on regular (tenure-track) appointment.  As documented in Comprehensive Standard 3.7.1, the quality of the College faculty is exceptional.

The College actively seeks a diverse faculty. Guidelines for faculty searches insure that vacancies are called to the attention of under-represented groups (Faculty Handbook, 2.2.3.A). Further, a department’s summary report of a faculty search must include applicant data on women and under-represented groups, and a rationale must be provided if the successful candidate is not a woman or member of an under-represented group (Faculty Handbook, 2.2.3.F). Evidence of the success of these efforts is that, of the 159 full-time faculty during fall 2005, 51 (32%) are women, 36 of which are tenured. Twenty-four (15%) of the full-time faculty are minority, including nine Asian-American, five African-American, and nine Hispanic faculty members. Twelve minority faculty are tenured (2005–2006 Fact File).
