Compliance Certification Report

Core Requirement 2.7 - Degree program length, course of study, general education program, and contractual agreements for instruction

2.7.4 Contractual Agreements for Instruction
Provides instruction for all course work required for at least one degree program at each level at which it awards degrees. If the institution makes arrangements for some instruction to be provided by other accredited institutions or entities through contracts or consortia, or uses some other alternative approach to meeting this requirement, the alternative approach must be approved by the Commission on Colleges. In all cases, the institution demonstrates that it controls all aspects of its educational program.

Judgment of Compliance

Davidson College is in compliance with Core Requirement 2.7.4.

Rationale for Judgment of Compliance

Davidson College provides instruction for all coursework in all its degree programs. The institution does not participate in any experiential learning programming. The policy for the undergraduate program is articulated in “General Information and Regulations” in the Davidson College Catalog.

Davidson, similar to most liberal arts colleges, has a process of evaluating transfer credits on an individual course-basis.  As stated in the catalog:

The host college must be regionally accredited for a “liberal arts and general” program or analogously accredited in countries outside the United States.  The course must be consistent with the academic objectives of Davidson College.  In order to receive credit, the student must earn the grade of “C-” or higher.

Transfer credit assigned at Davidson is on an ungraded basis (UG) and is not used in computing the grade point average.  Transfer credit is limited to 16 courses (or no more than one-half of the courses for graduation) and no more than one-half of the courses used to satisfy major requirements.  Individual departments may employ additional restrictions.

(Note: The College is aware that the projected 2006 reauthorization of the Higher Education Act may lead to re-examination of its policy and consequent removal of insistence upon “regionally accredited” U.S. institutions.)

For additional detail on the process through which Davidson College faculty oversee the approval of academic programs, see the Davidson College Constitution, Article III.
