Core Requirement 2.7 - Degree program length, course of study, general education program, and contractual agreements for instruction

2.7.1 Program Length
Offers one or more degree programs based on at least 60 semester credit hours or the equivalent at the associate level; at least 120 semester credit hours or the equivalent at the baccalaureate level; or at least 30 semester credit hours or the equivalent at the post-baccalaureate, graduate, or professional level. The institution provides a written justification and rationale for program equivalency.

Judgment of Compliance

Davidson College is in compliance with Core Requirement 2.7.1.

Rationale for Judgment of Compliance

All of the College's degree programs exceed the credit hours indicated in the requirement.

The College offers degrees at only the bachelor level including a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of  Science. Like many other liberal arts colleges, Davidson College uses a course-credit system rather than a semester-hour system.  Each course is given only one transcript credit.  A one-credit course at Davidson has equal the amount of contact and depth of study as four credit hours in a credit-hour system.  In the Davidson College Catalog, under the section entitled “Academic Program and Policies: The Curriculum,” the credit policy is explained as follows:

Credit is granted on a course credit basis, with a course being equivalent (for transfer purposes) to four semester or six quarter hours.

The Davidson College Catalog states:

Davidson offers a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science degree.  To receive a bachelor’s degree the candidate for the degree shall: complete satisfactorily 32 courses, at least one-half (16) in residence at Davidson College.

Thus, 32 course credits at Davidson is equivalent to 128 semester hours.
