Core Requirement 2.10 - Student support and services

The institution provides student support programs, services, and activities consistent with its mission that promote student learning and enhance the development of its students.

Judgment of Compliance

Davidson College is in compliance with Core Requirement 2.10.

Rationale for Judgment of Compliance

According to its Statement of Purpose, “the primary purpose of Davidson College is to prepare young men and women for lives of leadership and service.” It is within this framework that the Division of Student Life dedicates its staff and program resources. Student support programs and services are the primary responsibilities of the departments within the Division of Student Life at Davidson. Its distinctive mission is as follows:

The staff in the Division of Student Life promotes Davidson College’s commitment to educate students in ways that are mentally, spiritually, and physically liberating. We seek to provide an environment that fosters students’ self-understanding through personal and intellectual development in a diverse and caring community.  In challenging and supporting students, we provide resources and opportunities for leadership, service, recreation, and reflection while encouraging a life-long commitment to learning, integrity, and mutual respect.

It is within this context that we provide programs, services and activities in the following departments:  Career Services, Community Service, Office of the Chaplaincy, College Union, Student Health, Minority Services, Students with Special Needs, Dean of Students Office, Public Safety, and Residential Life. As our mission suggests, we are committed to student growth, whether it be by engaging in community service, spiritual life, leadership development, civic engagement, career preparation or student health. We seek multiple opportunities for students to be involved in decision-making, student governance, student programs and many other choices with over 100 student organizations from which to choose.

To promote student learning, each department within student life has established learning outcomes and assessment. These outcomes have identified the specific and multiple ways that involvement in the co-curricular opportunities at Davidson promotes student learning and development.
