The preparation
of a competitive proposal is a time-consuming process. Before embarking
on this endeavor, principal investigators or project directors should
review agency program descriptions and talk with program officers to ensure
1) compatibility of the proposed research or project with funding agency
priorities and 2) availability of funds.
When the funding agency permits, principal investigators and project directors
should take advantage of opportunities to submit concept papers, preproposals,
or other project descriptions for presubmission review and comment. Proposal
preparation "tip sheets" and "how-to" books, e-mail address and telephone
numbers for program officers are all available from the Grants and Contracts
Office. In addition, Davidson College is fortunate to have many faculty
members who have been successful grant writers, who have served on review
panels and who are willing to read and comment on proposal drafts written
by others. Contact the Grants and Contracts Office for more information.

Time permitting,
the Grants and Contracts departmental assistant will type application
forms and photocopy, collate and mail proposals. To facilitate this process
the Grants and Contracts Office needs:

correct spellings of foreign words or terms unique to the discipline;
reference forms, names, titles, address and telephone numbers for references;
a complete set of agency instructions and forms;
the original application coversheet with required signatures;
the proposal and budget (one hard copy plus disk)
Many forms are now downloadable from the Internet and can be completed
on the computer.
Individuals requiring assistance with forms should contact the Grants

Sponsors
usually require more than one copy of the proposal. The Grants Office
provides the required number of copies plus a file copy for the principal
investigator or project director. The Grants Office will absorb mailing
costs when proposals are sent via the U.S. postal system or via Federal
Express Express Saver . Mail that must be sent overnight express will be
billed
to the department or to the principal investigator or project director.
Please note that express carriers are subject to equipment failures and
weather delays and therefore do not guarantee on-time delivery. In some
remote locations or small cities, overnight delivery service may not be
available.
When time constraints dictate, the principal investigator or project director
will be responsible for mailing the proposal. |
