Performance Opportunities

The Department of Theatre and Speech claims one
of the most active and student-centered programs at Davidson. The
curriculum is balanced between courses in production arts such as
directing, acting, and design and survey or theory courses,
including public speaking. While these courses are well attended,
many students also participate in the production of plays as an
extracurricular activity. In fact, the program is centered philosophically
on the value of theatre as a collaborative endeavour which supports
and enhances the liberal arts ideal of disciplined, collective learning
as preparation for life. All students are encouraged to participate
in the curriculum and the program, whatever their career goals.
The 1999-2000 Academic year saw 266 students participating in the
theatre program. Over all there were 32 performances of nine plays,
performed before an audience of approximately 3,555 people. Auditions
are open to ALL Davidson students and are posted throughout the
campus at least one week in advance. There are opportunities to
Stage Manage and assist Faculty or Guest Directors and Designers.
Directing and Design opportunities are also available for upperclassmen.
There are opportunities to produce plays supplemental to the department's
regular offerings.
The department keeps a file of available internships at various
regional and national theatres. Local internships are available
at various sites including the Charlotte Repertory Theatre and WBTV
Charlotte (Jefferson Pilot).
