Our Facilities
We operate in the John R. Cunningham Fine Arts building, which
was erected in 1961 on the site of Davidson College's original chapel
(built in 1838).
Our
mainstage facility is the 626-seat Duke
Family Performance Hall, a state-of-the-art theatre located
across campus in the Knobloch Campus Center. Opened in February
of 2002, and christened by the Royal Shakespeare Company's production
of The Merchant of Venice, the DFPH is one of the premiere
performance spaces in the southeast. For more technical information
about the Duke Family Performance Hall, click here.
Our secondary theatre is the intimate, 289-seat Lillian Brown Hodson
Hall, nestled in the centre of Cunningham. Also a proscenium stage,
Hodson Hall is used for the majority of productions in our Second
Stage Series. The 100-seat convertible Black Box Theatre hosts a
variety of performances each year, including Second Stage performances,
directing projects, the Studio Theatre project, and many other student
initiatives.
Our acting/directing studio is a large room in Cunningham that
has the space and flooring to accommodate our varied needs, including
both classes and rehearsals. We also offer a script library, indexed
for student and faculty reference, and a design studio, which houses
both scenic and lighting design. Cunningham also has a well-equipped
costume shop and accompanying storage facility, as well as two dressing
rooms and a large make-up area with traditional lighted mirrors.
We have a functional scene shop equipped with typical power tools
(radial arm saw, table saw, band saw, miter box, air-compressed
pneumatic, cordless Makita drills, and more), and maintain an off-campus
warehouse for storage. |
