Davidson in Kikuyu Program

Kikuyu, Kenya

2003 Kikuyu Group in the Masai Mara Game Reserve

The Davidson in Kikuyu Program began in 1999 and is led by Dr. Jeremiah Putnam, Premedical Director and Professor of Biology at Davidson College. The month-long summer program features a unique hands-on medical and service experience for pre-medical students.

The program allows students to intern at the Presbyterian Church East Africa Kikuyu Hospital, fifteen miles outside of Nairobi, Kenya. In the hospital, students have the opportunity to scrub in for surgeries, follow physicians on rounds, and even assist with certain procedures. In addition to hands-on medical experience, students have the opportunity to do community service at various local orphanages by working with AIDS orphans. Students prepare for the summer program by taking a biology seminar in the spring concerning human diseases prevalent in developing countries.
