The funding for this grant was made available through the generosity of the Sunshine Lady Foundation in order to promote student learning about effective and responsible philanthropy. The grant money will be awarded to one or more non-profit agencies which submit what the students judget to be the most promising project proposals. The grant thus has two equally important important purposes: (1) pedagogical -- to promote student learning about grant-writing, project proposals, and effective philanthropy, and (2) service -- to insure that these funds are allocated to the most worthy project proposal generated in the broader community. The students of POL324 are responsible for all aspects of the grant, including determined of eligibility requirements, priorities and preferences, application procedures, and selection of grantee(s). Neither the Sunshine Lady Foundation nor Davidson College plays any role in these deliberations. Representatives of eligible non-profits who are considering applying for these funds should be aware that the students administering this grant all have extensive volunteer experience in the non-profit sector, are studying aspects of philanthropy and the non-profit sector in considerable detail, and are taking their responsibility to allocate this grant money very seriously. Thank you for your interest in the grant, for your work in the community, and for your patience with our handling of the grant process as the students confront the many challenges of effective philanthropy. This grant is named in honor of Ruth Pittard, who has graced Davidson College with her presence for the past thirty years. Her work in several departments of the college, including her current role as Assistant Dean of Community Service, has always demonstrated an unending compassion for Davidson students and for the service learning process. Her close relationship with the Sunshine Lady led Ruth and Dr. Menkhaus to partner with the Sunshine Lady Foundation to offer our course the unique opportunity of granting $10,000 as an example of community learning. This semester marks Ruth's last at Davidson, and she will be missed immensely by students, faculty, staff, and community members. We strive to embody Ruth's generous spirit and her personal mission statement to "practice love in the world" as we move through this unique grant-giving process. A total of $10,000 in grant money is available to eligible non-profit agencies through a competitive application process. Registered
