The Galleries and Collection

On either side of the front entrance of the Belk Visual Arts Center are the William H. Van Every, Jr. and Edward M. Smith Galleries, providing over 2,000 square feet for exhibitions. The College's 2,700-piece permanent collection is housed in climate-controlled quarters in the basement with adjoining rooms for preparation and materials storage. These areas are managed by the Gallery Director. Gallery exhibitions by student, faculty, regional, national, and international artists change about every six weeks.

Since the opening of the Visual Arts Center in 1993, shows have included long established artists such as Kenneth Noland, Ansel Adams, Italo Scanga, Betye Saar, Robert Colescott, Glenn Ligon, and the first comprehensive retrospective and catalogue of visionary paintings by the late Reverend McKendree Robbins Long (co-organized with the North Carolina Museum of Art). Exciting younger artists such as Patrick Donley, Marco Breuer, and Jimmy O'Neal are also featured in solo and thematic group exhibitions. Whenever possible these artists are brought to campus for an opening reception and lectures with students and the public.

Student employees working as gallery attendants enable the galleries to be open a total of 43 hours per week when the College is in session: seven hours daily on weekdays and four hours daily on weekends.
In addition, student employees regularly assist the gallery director with exhibition installatins, gallery information, artist receptions, and collection research and cataloging. These tasks help provide students interested in gallery and museum work with valuable experience as well as financial assistance to attend Davidson.

The gallery also sponsors the Art in Offices program in which framed art from the Collection is lent each year to public offices on campus where it can be enjoyed by members of the College family and visitors to Davidson.
