THINKING ABOUT
ART HISTORY
Because
fewer high schools offer AP art history courses than AP
studio courses, not many prospective students enter Davidson
intending to be art history majors. However, many first-
and second-year students who prefer learning about art to
making it fulfill their fine arts requirement by choosing
one of the six to eight art history offerings available
each semester. Students in all disciplines benefit from
experiencing the visual images that connect them to the
history and culture of their world, and each year about
a dozen students declare an art major with an emphasis in
art history.

STUDIO
ART
Many
prospective students who want to become future artists ask
about the advantages of attending a liberal arts college
rather than an art school for their undergraduate degree.
From Davidson's viewpoint, the advantages are a more stimulating
environment and a multi-disciplinary approach, both of which
provide a wider world view and a deeper understanding of
art within its historical context, as well as broader career
perspectives and opportunities.

APPLYING
Prospective students who have pursued a strong interest in making
art throughout high school, and especially those who are considering
an art major, are encouraged to submit a slide portfolio of
their work as part of their college application. This portfolio
should include 10 to 20 slides, labeled with the student's name
and each work's title and date, secured in a clear plastic slide
view sheet. Please send slides or photographs of your work--do
not send a CD! |
|
|
|
The portfolio
should be sent to the Admission Office (Box 7156, Davidson, NC 28035-7156)
by the application deadline (no later than February 1). It then
will be reviewed and rated by our four studio art professors, and
an average of those ratings will become part of your college application
materials. A high art rating may be helpful in securing acceptance
to the College for qualified applicants. The Admission Office and
Art Department cannot accept or rate actual artwork as part of the
application process. However, a prospective student who plans to
visit Davidson may want to bring a portfolio of original work to
show one of our studio artists.
Arrangements usually can be made for prospective students to attend
art classes, receive a special tour of the Belk Visual Arts Center,
and talk further with art faculty and/or majors. Please
contact department assistant Brenda P. King (704-894-2344),
brking@davidson.edu at least one week before your visit in order to schedule these parts
of your time on campus.

SCHOLARSHIPS
While
the art department does not offer any scholarships in art
history, prospective students interested in this area of study
are encouraged to explore financial assistance through the
Office
of Financial Aid.
Two competitive scholarships are available through the art
department for incoming students who are considering an art
major with an emphasis in studio art:
The Pepper Visual
Arts Scholarship, valued at $5,000 per year, was established by James G. Pepper '65 and his mother,
Mrs. Nita Easly Pepper. It is offered to one student
in the first year class who shows exceptional promise in studio
art. The award is renewable for the sophomore year on the
basis of satisfactory academic progress and significant
involvement in the visual arts. Renewal for the junior and
senior years is also contingent upon the declaration of a major
in art history or studio art.

The
Bearden Visual Arts Scholarship, valued
at $10,000 per year, was created in memory of the
internationally acclaimed artist Romare Bearden, established by
his late wife, Nannette Bearden. It is offered to one
student in the first year class who shows exceptional promise as
a studio artist. Preference is given to students of color,
especially African-American students. The award is
renewable on the basis of satisfactory academic progress and
significant involvement in the visual arts.

Competition for both scholarships is intense. Recipients are
chosen on the basis of a portfolio review by the Art Department.
Applicants must submit the Special Application Scholarship form
and 12-15 slides or photographs of their work, each labeled with
the image's title and the student's name. (These will not
be returned.)
|
|
|
The student
who applies for these scholarships should have a serious intention
to consider a major in the area of studio art; however, application
for these scholarships is not a binding commitment to become an
art major if a student determines later that another major is more
suitable. It is a natural part of the liberal arts philosophy to
encourage openness to all possibilities.
|
|
|
Scholarship
applicants should follow the application process outlined above
and include a completed Part 7-Special Application Scholarship Form
with their submission.
Slides must reach the Admission Office no later than January 2.
If slides already were submitted as part of your general application,
please send only the completed Part 7 to indicate your interest
in being considered for a scholarship -- do not send a second set
of slides.
