Nanette Rohan Bearden, during her tenure as President of the Romare Howard Bearden Foundation, created a scholarship for African-American artists at Davidson College in memory of her late husband, internationally acclaimed artist Romare Howard Bearden. Two $10,000 scholarships are available to support Bearden Scholars at Davidson.

In the early 1960s, Romare Bearden switched from abstract painting to collage. Drawing on knowledge and memories of the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s and 1930s, Bearden took collage as a medium to its apex with paint and paper blending together to form works of enormous beauty, power, and intensity. His works continue to gain respect throughout the world and hang in museums and private collections around the globe.

Nanette Bearden said that she wanted to create the scholarship not only to honor her husband and his work, but also to inspire younger artists to pursue careers in the visual arts. "Romare was always trying to assist young artists in developing their careers. In 1967 he formed the Spiral Group which brought together 15 African-American artists to explore the black aesthetic. In 1971 he formed Cinque Gallery in New York City to promote the works of emerging African-American artists.

To Herb Jackson, William H. Williamson Professor of Fine Arts at Davidson and a personal friend of both Romare and Nanette Bearden, the Bearden Scholarship seems a particularly appropriate tribute to the artist whose birthplace and boyhood home was Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. "Romare Bearden is one of America's greatest artists, without restriction. I only wish the students who will benefit from this largesse could have known Romy personally, as I did. I hope that in studying his work they will come to know him and appreciate him."
